THE ARCHITECT OF THE SUMMIT

His Excellency Lyonchen Jigmi Y. Thinley, Prime Minister of Bhutan is the Chairman of the XVIth SAARC Summit and the guiding spirit behind the organization and successful conclusion of the Summit. The Thimphu Summit has been billed as the grandest and the most colorful Summit to date.

XVITH SAARC SUMMIT ART COMPETITION

On the sidelines of the XVIth SAARC Summit, an art competition was held where artists from all the SAARC member countries participated. The following are some of the work executed by the artists.

Bhutan hosted the XVIth SAARC Summit in Thimphu, from 28th - 29th April, 2009. Some of the visiting media people were agog at the scale and grandeur of the arrangements made by the organizers of the Summit. They admitted that they have never before seen such a colorful and impeccably managed SAARC Summit.

In addition to important commitments and pledges made by various member states, the Thimphu Summit is significant in that, for the first time since the Mumbai blasts of 2008, the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan agreed to a one-on-one bi-lateral meeting on the sidelines of the Summit. It later emerged that the two leaders agreed to get their respective Foreign Ministers and Secretaries to work out the modalities of re-establishing trust and confidence which would pave the way for the two neighbors to hold serious discussions on all aspects of their concerns.

The last meeting between the two leaders took place in July, 2009.
